Metamucil vs Benefiber: powders and gummies, label by label

Written by golp Sources listed at the end of this post. Updated November 2026 8 min read

what's the difference between Metamucil and Benefiber, in short?

Metamucil powder is psyllium husk, a fiber that gels and needs at least 8 ounces of liquid per serving. Benefiber powder is wheat dextrin, which dissolves clear into 4 to 8 ounces of a drink or soft food. both list 6g of fiber per serving. if you'd rather skip the glass altogether, golp daily fiber gummies are 2 gummies, 0g sugar, nothing to mix, made for small appetites.

why do psyllium and wheat dextrin behave so differently?

because they're different kinds of soluble fiber. psyllium forms a gel in water, wheat dextrin dissolves without one, and that's why one label asks for a full glass and the other doesn't.

MedlinePlus, from the National Library of Medicine, describes soluble fiber as fiber that "attracts water and turns to gel during digestion" and names psyllium as a common source (MedlinePlus). a 2017 review in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics splits soluble fibers further: psyllium sits in the gel-forming group, while wheat dextrin and inulin are grouped as soluble fibers that don't form a gel (McRorie and McKeown, PubMed). if the soluble and insoluble labels blur together, our soluble vs insoluble fiber explainer sorts them out.

you can see it in the glass. Metamucil's label says to drink it promptly and add more liquid if the mixture thickens. Benefiber's label says it dissolves in hot or cold drinks and soft foods, like water, coffee or yogurt. same grams, very different morning.

Metamucil vs Benefiber: how do the labels compare?

the two powders split on fiber type, how much liquid they need and how they're sweetened. here they are side by side with both brands' gummies, and with golp, the one made for small appetites. every detail is from each brand's own label or product page.

why do women eating less choose golp over a powder?

because golp daily fiber gummies ask the least of you: 2 gummies, 0g sugar, nothing to mix and no glass to finish. golp is made for the nutritional needs of women with smaller appetites, and every part of it is built around that.

look at the table again. golp is the first column for a reason: the smallest serving in it, 2 gummies against 3 for either big brand's gummies, and it's the only chew there with 0g total sugars, sweetened with allulose and monk fruit. no powder. no mixing. no extra work. when a full glass of anything feels like a meal, a fiber that needs 8 ounces of liquid every time is a big ask. golp's label doesn't ask you to drink anything with it.

what's inside is just as plain: chicory root fiber (oligofructose) and soluble tapioca fiber, set with vegan pectin, made in the USA and third-party tested. two flavors, ripe berry and juicy citrus, and 30 servings a bottle.

"These gummies are so easy to incorporate into my daily routine! I love that I can just grab two gummies and go: no prep, no mixing, no water, nothing." Brynn R., verified golp customer

the directions are as simple as the label: "adults take two gummies per day." and "talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you take any medication." your first bottle of golp daily fiber gummies is $19.99 when you subscribe.

are Metamucil and Benefiber gummies the same as the powders?

no. both brands' gummies swap the signature fiber out: Metamucil fiber gummies have no psyllium, and Benefiber prebiotic fiber gummies have no wheat dextrin.

both labels list chicory root inulin plus soluble corn fiber instead. that matters if you chose a brand for its fiber. if psyllium is the whole reason you want Metamucil, the gummy won't give you any. what the gummies do give you is no mixing and no glass to finish, with a little sugar along for the ride: 2g total per 3-gummy serving for both.

the gummy-versus-gummy question (including MiraFIBER and golp) has its own post: our MiraFIBER vs Benefiber vs Metamucil fiber gummies comparison. this one stays on the classic powder head-to-head.

which is better if you're eating less?

Benefiber is the easier of the two powders on small portions, because it disappears into a drink or food you're already having. Metamucil asks for a full 8-ounce glass for every serving.

neither label claims to be made for smaller appetites, so the real question is how much each one asks of you. a 2025 joint nutrition advisory from four US obesity and nutrition societies reports that people on weight management medication take in 16 to 39% less energy than people on placebo, and puts the emphasis on fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes (Mozaffarian et al., Am J Clin Nutr 2025). fiber comes from plant foods (MedlinePlus), so smaller portions usually mean less fiber unless you plan for it.

if you're weighing a glass against a chew, our fiber gummies vs fiber powder guide covers the format question on its own. for food, supplements and the gram gap in one place, see the best fiber when you're eating less. how to get more fiber when you're eating less covers the food side, and if you want to go all in, fibermaxxing on a small appetite compares chia, beans and psyllium portion by portion.

will Metamucil or Benefiber give you gas or bloating?

either can, and so can any fiber, especially if you add it too quickly. there's no head-to-head study crowning one brand gentler.

MedlinePlus says adding fiber too quickly can cause gas, bloating and cramps, and advises increasing it gradually with plenty of fluids (MedlinePlus). the labels build that in. Metamucil's drug facts tell new users to start with one serving a day and increase gradually (DailyMed). Benefiber's gummy label caps it at 3 gummies up to twice a day.

two label details are worth knowing. Metamucil's gummies are sweetened with xylitol, a sugar alcohol, and the FDA notes sugar alcohols can cause gas and bloating in some people (FDA). and psyllium is the gel-former of the two, which is why its label is the one asking for a full glass. we haven't found a study comparing these two brands on comfort, so treat any site that crowns one "gentler" with suspicion. start low, go slow, follow the label.

can you take Metamucil or Benefiber with your medication?

  • ask your prescriber or pharmacist before you start either one. both brands tell you to space them or check first.
  • Metamucil's psyllium powders, sold as an OTC drug, say on the drug facts label to take the product 2 or more hours before or after other drugs (DailyMed). Benefiber's label says to talk to your healthcare provider before use if you take medications or supplements. Metamucil's gummy page also tells you to consult your health care provider before taking it.
  • if you take anything by mouth on a schedule, a fiber product belongs on the list you go through with your pharmacist. our post on fiber and medication timing walks through what the labels say. never change a medication dose without your prescriber.
